Cirque load-in.

I dropped the point-and-shoot in my pocket today for the load-in of Cirque Eloize, a Quebec-based company that's here for four days. Think Cirque du Soleil, but scaled to tour in one semi trailer and fit in lots of different moderately-sized venues, instead of 55 semi trailers including their own traveling venue.

This was late in the afternoon, after all their drops, truss, and rigging were in the air and we were focusing lights. I try not to make a nuisance of myself carrying a camera at work, so I take what I can get in a dark theater without drawing too much attention. The image is pretty noisy, since I think I had the ISO up at 800 (the EXIF doesn't seem to show it, so I'm not certain).

Samantha.

The start of a new year seemed like an appropriate time to try to get back to some daily photos. I haven't done a lot of portraits, but I was lucky to be able to start this new year with my girlfriend, who is always encouraging me to take more photos--so I'll start off 2009 with this shot of her.

Apartment doors.

I like the light and the perspective in this shot. I wanted there to be something interesting just to the left that I could have included in the shot, but it was just a bright, blank, cloudy sky (which would have been way overexposed) and more dull apartment buildings in the distance.

Ceiling abstract.

I don't think this is a very interesting photograph, even after a bunch of tweaking, but it's all I have for the day. I cropped it down pretty far, so it doesn't look so great at a large display size.

Making tomato sauce.

My girlfriend and I went to a local farm today and bought about 20 pounds of organically grown tomatoes for 30 dollars. The rest of the afternoon pretty much looked like this. Now I just have to find room in the freezer for eight quarts of pasta sauce...

Comedy and tragedy masks.

A pair of masks on a backstage prop table before appearing in a visually stunning production of Romeo and Juliette by the Tchaikovsky Ballet and Orchestra, from Perm, Russia.

Climbing gear.

I guess I missed a few days there. I actually took a few more interesting shots at work - maybe I'll get back to posting them at some point.

Today my roommate was itching to get out and do something with his day off, so he suggested checking out a local climbing gym. I probably haven't been climbing in four years or more, so I had to do some digging to find my harness and shoes. I didn't bother taking my camera to the gym, since I wouldn't have had any free hands to use it, but I did take this shot at home.

Lamp base.

This is the base of a halogen desk lamp, with a pair of counterweights that pivot to balance the weight of the arm. The design has always intrigued me - I like the clean look and the mechanical action. The photo was a quick experimental effort. With more time and attention I think I could make a more interesting shot. Though this composition doesn't thrill me, I do like the odd juxtaposition of static and active.

Tax time.

Something appropriate for today. Before you ask, I wasn't still doing my taxes today. I don't like to leave things for the last minute. I mailed them yesterday...

Thanks to Matt for letting me borrow his famed 100mm macro lens.
