jpellow > March 11, 2008 Guess what it is... I haven't done a 'guess what it is' before, but I thought this one might be fun. My only hint is that I didn't take it at work and it has nothing to do with theatre--I came across it while I was out for a walk today.
jpellow > January 18, 2009 Binocular self-portrait. I thought of these compact binoculars when I was looking for a daily photo today. First I thought I would try a shot head-on, with the small refracted images coming through the binoculars, but as soon as I took them out I was intrigued by the reflections in the lenses. I set up my camera on a tripod and put it right next to my face, placed the binoculars on some black velour about a foot away, and swung my desk lamp around to light my face but not the binoculars. The result is almost SOOC. I just tweaked the whole image with a slight curves adjustment and some sharpening - no fiddling with with the reflections. The orange color is from the lens coatings. I think it's a pretty neat image, though it's kind of a creepy look for me.
jpellow > January 9, 2009 Wooden cube puzzle. Is anyone else starting to get bored with my daily photos? I am. I should have some chances to get out and about with my camera in the next few days -- hopefully I'll be able to mix it up a little. I've noticed my photos look a bit darker once I upload them and see them on Smugmug than they do in Photoshop. When I was adjusting in Photoshop, I saw noticably more light and shadow on the surface around the subject, which I liked better. I haven't carefully compared the appearance in different browsers on the same monitor to see if they differ.
jpellow > January 14, 2009 Sam at her laptop. I actually took this last night, but it was pretty late so I'm counting it for today. I did the B&W conversion using the Channel Mixer in Photoshop with the 'monochrome' option. By moving the blue slider all the way up and the red and green down, it made the bluish light from the computer screen on her face brighter and toned down the yellowish incandescent light on the wall behind her.
jpellow > May 23, 2008 Movie ticket. I got home after catching a late-night movie and still needed a photo, so I went for the first thing that presented itself. I think the composition is slightly unbalanced because of the dark top right corner, but I rather like the light and the lines.

Didn't get anything really dramatic, but this shot gave me some good practice for some PS techniques I've been working on. I think it came out pretty well. Seems very industrial to me - I think it looks like machinery in an old factory. Can anyone point me to a tutorial on making sepia images in Photoshop? It seems I don't know quite enough about color adjustment tools to figure it out for myself. UPDATE: Thanks for all the comments and especially to Brian Hart for his PS advice. jpellow > January 13, 2009 Boots. I put new laces in my work boots today - the outer sheath had worn through on the old ones. I think the grommets on the eyelets are not of the highest quality. The laces snag a bit as they pull through, so I have to replace them periodically.
jpellow > January 6, 2009 Zecar and friends. Some fun toys that recently found their way to my desk. I'm not that happy with this shot technically or compositionally - maybe if I didn't keep getting distracted by the toys I'd be able to focus on taking a good photo...
jpellow > January 5, 2009 Wacky reflection. I don't know quite what possessed me to climb up on the bathroom counter to take pictures of the light fixture. I guess it was just my affinity for shiny things. Actually, I still think the way the light falls on the curved arms of the fixture is pretty interesting, but unfortunately I wasn't happy with any of my shots, so I went with this one from the "just for fun" category instead. It's probably not worth looking too closely, but if you do you'll notice that I'm standing on the edge of the sink in my socks to take it. The way I was leaning around to get interesting angles on the light fixture, I'm probably lucky I didn't lose my balance.

Tension blocks.

I spent a few minutes with my camera and tripod backstage tonight. Didn't get anything really dramatic, but this shot gave me some good practice for some PS techniques I've been working on. I think it came out pretty well. Seems very industrial to me - I think it looks like machinery in an old factory.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial on making sepia images in Photoshop? It seems I don't know quite enough about color adjustment tools to figure it out for myself.
